Architectural differences

Desktop-first vs mobile-first

VS Code is designed for a desktop or laptop with a mouse, physical keyboard, and large display. Its UI, layouts, and interaction model assume that environment. Darkian Studio is designed for touch input on Android and for Linux desktops, with an interface built around panes, a command palette, and an on-screen special-keys bar rather than a desktop window manager.

One runtime for everything

In DS, the editor, terminal, Git, LSP servers, debugger, and extensions all communicate through one runtime abstraction. That means they share one environment: the same PATH, the same filesystem, the same environment variables, the same installed SDKs, and the same Python (or other) interpreter. A package you install in the terminal is visible to the language server and the debugger without additional configuration. VS Code also runs these against one host OS, but it reaches that host through the normal process model and a separate Extension Host process rather than a single bridge server, and its remote model runs an entire separate VS Code instance on the remote machine.

Runtime model

VS Code runs as a native desktop application and executes tooling directly on the host operating system. Darkian Studio does not bundle a full OS runtime inside the app. On Android it drives a Termux environment through a local bridge; on Linux/macOS it can use a system runtime or a dsterm host. The editor, terminal, LSP servers, debugger, and extensions all communicate through that runtime, reached through dsterm — a multiplexed endpoint where the PTY, LSP, DAP, extension host, and execution features are all reached through one connection, which is what lets the editor, terminal, language servers, debugger, and extensions share a single runtime session.

Extension compatibility

VS Code runs extensions in a dedicated Extension Host process against the complete vscode API, with a centralized Marketplace of tens of thousands of extensions including first-party Microsoft language and remote extensions. Darkian Studio integrates the Open VS X marketplace as its extension backend, so users can browse and install VS Code-compatible extensions (.vsix) directly, and it runs these through an extension host (ds-extension-host) that implements a subset of the vscode API.

Important nuance: availability of an extension in Open VS X does not guarantee compatibility. Compatibility depends on which portions of the vscode API the extension actually uses.

  • Works well: extensions that contribute diagnostics, commands, configuration, or file-system access — including many LSP-activator and static-only extensions (themes, grammars, snippets, languages).
  • Limited: extensions whose value lives in custom editor UI, integrated terminals, or the debug/SCM views have large unimplemented surface area.
  • Microsoft-exclusive extensions (Remote-SSH, Remote-Containers, WSL, Live Share, Codespaces) are blocked by an allow/deny list.
  • The implemented API surface will expand over time; today’s limits are not a permanent ceiling.

Remote runtimes

VS Code’s remote development is first-class: Remote-SSH, Dev Containers, and WSL connect the full editor — including the extension host — to a remote machine. Darkian Studio’s runtime is not only local — its dsterm bridge can connect to a Linux or macOS host, so the editor, terminal, language servers, debugger, and extensions all run against that remote runtime. Connecting a DS workspace to a Windows-hosted dsterm endpoint is not supported in this beta. DS also supports SFTP/FTP/FTPS/WebDAV as file-level remotes.
